Welcome to The Downshire Hotel

The Downshire Hotel, nestled in the heart of Portpatrick, stands as a warm testament to Scottish hospitality and history. This charming circa-1800 coaching inn offers more than just lodging—it provides a genuine local experience framed by its rich heritage and lively atmosphere. Though the building’s age is evident, lending character and a homely feel, guests appreciate the inviting, down-to-earth vibe that is rarely found in larger establishments.

Visitors often praise the hotel’s friendly and attentive staff, who go beyond the call of duty to make each stay memorable. From accommodating special requests to thoughtful gestures like early departure breakfast packages, the service reflects genuine care. The rooms, while modest and showing signs of time, prove comfortable, with touches such as king-size beds offsetting any constraints. Practicality meets rustic charm, creating an honest and grounded lodging experience.

The Downshire’s true heartbeat comes alive in its public house, a local gem cherished by both visitors and residents. This bar hums with warmth and camaraderie, offering well-kept beers, a congenial crowd, and classic pub entertainment—from pool tables and jukeboxes to darts. It is a place where stories are shared and friendships forged, embodying the spirit of Portpatrick’s community.

Location-wise, the hotel excels with its central position, making key attractions easily accessible on foot. Guests can explore the nearby Portpatrick Lifeboat Museum, enjoy a round of golf at the Portpatrick Golf Club, or visit the intriguing Dunskey Castle just a short drive away. For travelers seeking a base steeped in authentic Scottish culture and scenic beauty, The Downshire Hotel fits the bill.

Reflecting on the collective experiences shared by visitors, one senses a narrative of warmth, resilience, and heartfelt connections. From tales of leisurely pint stops after long walks to profound personal moments marked within its rooms, The Downshire stands not just as a place to stay, but as a repository of lasting memories. Hotel doesn't look like much from the outside but they have probably the best public house in the Port. Great atmosphere, pool table, juke box, darts etc. Friendly locals who really love their drink!

I stayed with my poorly husband we actuallly married a month later on 5th Feb. All i can say the staff was nice and we asked to be moved in a better room. It was nice in room 1. I will always remember it with fond memories because of my husbands passing on christmas eve 2017. Thank you for being so nice to us both.

It's an old hotel, so do expect that facilities and rooms are ageing. Easy to walk from the hotel to everywhere in the village. Staff is extremely nice. Had to leave before breakfast time, so I got a package with tasty sandwiches and drinks in front of the door when I left. Will return for sure.
